Finding a good home tutor in India still runs on word of mouth. When we started on The MentR, both sides of the market had the same problems:

• Parents had no reliable way to verify a tutor's identity, qualifications or teaching ability before letting them into their home.
• Matching was manual. Board, class, subjects, timings, location and budget all had to line up, and most searches ended in endless calls and compromises.
• Once classes started, parents had little visibility into what was actually taught, how far the syllabus had moved or how their child was performing.
• Billing was informal, with cash payments, missed dues and no record of completed classes.
• Good teachers lacked a trusted channel to find students, prove their credentials and get paid on time.

The core challenge for us was:

How do we build trust on both sides of a home tutoring marketplace, and keep parents informed long after the tutor walks in the door?

We built The MentR as two connected apps, one for parents and one for teachers, around a single verified marketplace.

1. Guided Onboarding that Captures What Matters

Parents tell us exactly what their child needs in a few friendly, illustrated steps:

• Student details with board, school and class, with support for multiple children
• Subjects, plus a choice between covering the whole syllabus or starting from a specific chapter
• Three preferred time slots and a teaching location pinned on the map
• A monthly budget range, so matches are affordable from day one

2. Verified Matching with Built-in KYC

Trust is designed into every step of finding a mentor:

• Selfie verification with liveness checks confirms that a parent, not a minor, is booking
• Aadhaar and address-proof upload completes parent KYC
• Mentors are matched on subjects, timings, location and budget, then shared with their rates, schedule and rating
• Parents can book, call, give feedback on or request a change of mentor at any time

3. Live Progress Tracking for Parents

Parents always know what is happening in class:

• A home screen with the class in progress, upcoming schedule and pending exams
• Subject-wise progress for each student or group
• Chapter-by-chapter syllabus tracking marked completed, in progress or upcoming, with downloadable syllabi
• A class summary of sessions held, exams taken and assignments completed

4. Exams Built from a Question Bank

We made assessment part of the routine, not an afterthought:

• Parents create exams in three steps: subjects and chapters, marks and duration, then a question preview
• Questions come from a curated question bank, and any question can be swapped or the whole set regenerated
• A timed, distraction-free exam screen for the student
• Instant results with marks, correct and wrong answers, and a full response review

5. Transparent Schedules and Billing

We replaced informal payments with clear, predictable billing:

• A calendar of every class, with confirmed, cancelled and pending sessions
• Reschedule or cancel a class with full status tracking
• Monthly invoices for completed classes only, with tax and platform fees itemised
• Due-date reminders, overdue alerts and in-app payment

6. A Teacher App Built Around Verification

Teachers join through a structured, three-part onboarding journey:

• Personal, qualification and professional details, including classes, languages, boards and commute
• Institutional and private tuition experience, PAN and identity documents
• A virtual demo class reviewed by subject experts before approval
• Clear status updates at every step, from under review to accepted, along with a reason and a way to resubmit when something needs fixing

7. Growth and Earnings for Teachers

Once verified, teachers get the tools to grow:

• A task-based home screen that shows exactly what to do next
